Maria Liguori is a researcher in Neurosciences.

She obtained her M.D. degree at the University of Bari where she completed the residency training in neurology and earned a Ph.D. degree in Neuropthalmology (special section: Demyelinating Diseases).

She completed her scientific experience abroad, first as Research Assistant at the University of Cambridge, UK in 1999 (Brain Repair Center) and in 2001 (Neurology Unit, Addenbrooke’ Hospital).
From 2008 to 2010 dr. Liguori was a fellow at the Center for Neurological Imaging, Harvard Medical School of Boston (USA), working on projects investigating the correlations between imaging (MRI) features and molecular biomarkers in Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Back to Italy, Dr. Liguori was PI of a pilot project on MS financed by the National MS Society of USA (2012-2013) and titled: “Proteomic profiling of cerebrospinal fluid in clinically isolated syndrome: identification of biomarkers predictive of MS conversion” (published results).

Since then, she is applying her expertise in clinical, molecular and MRI research by running research projects that aim to approach MS and other neurodegenerative diseases (and their phenotypes) with a multidisciplinary strategy. To pursue this goal, she already established an exciting collaboration with other Institutes of the National Research Council of Italy (her affiliation) like the Institute of Intelligent Systems for Automation (ISSIA CNR), the University of Bari (Department of Basic Sciences, Neurosciences and Sense Organs, Faculty of Medicine) and the Istituto Nazionale Fisica Nucleare (INFN), Unit of Bari.

At present, Dr. Liguori is leading a research multidisciplinary 2-years project granted by the Italian Federation for Multiple Sclerosis (FISM), and titled: “Cognitive impairment in Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis: searching for biomarkers predictive of progression”.

The results of Dr. Liguori research activity have been published in peer-reviewed International Scientific Journals (no. 72 papers) 1 book chapter (co-Authorship).

She is also member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Journals: Medical Sciences (Neurosciences), Multiple Sclerosis International, Journal of Translational Internal Medicine (Neurology), Dataset Papers in Neurosciences, World Journal of Neurology.
